AI Chats – Basic & Agentic Chat

AI Chat is a conversational interface for asking questions about your document set, with cited answers pointing back to the underlying documents. AI Chat History is visible to your whole project team for easy sharing with colleagues.

Starting a New Chat

You can start an AI chat at any time from the ‘Ask AI’ button. Alternatively, you can open the larger view with the ‘AI Chats’ tab in the project and select ‘New Chat.’ We provide some AI-created questions to get you started.

Good questions to ask:

  • Factual questions about the case
  • Summary-style questions ("what happened between X and Y")
  • Questions that require connecting information across multiple documents
  • "Find all documents..." style requests — the answer can come back as an inline, savable document list
Basic vs. Agentic. AI Chat currently offers two modes, toggled per conversation. The toggle locks once a conversation has started, so pick the mode you want before sending your first message in a conversation.
  • Basic — a more direct retrieval-and-answer style, best for quick factual lookups.
  • Agentic (Beta) — a more capable mode that can reason through a question in multiple steps and synthesize findings across the corpus, showing its progress as it works (e.g., searching, reviewing results, synthesizing an answer) and a collapsible summary of the reasoning it used. Because Agentic Chat is in the beta phase, some functionality may still be incomplete or behave unexpectedly. See our Blog Post about Agentic Chat to learn more about our Agentic Chat.

If a query is taking too long, you can cancel it. A query that's too broad may return a suggestion to narrow it (e.g., by date range) rather than a slow, unfocused answer.

Viewing Chat History

Past AI Chat conversations are available to view in the left panel with the chat name, date the chat started, and the first prompt sent in the chat conversation.

There's currently no way to delete a chat conversation, so it's worth being deliberate about titles for anything you save.

Other Chat Actions:

  • Rename – Chats are automatically named with the start of your first message. You can rename these chats by selecting a chat, clicking the pencil icon next to the chat name, and updating the name.
  • Pin – Pinning a chat puts it at the top of the chat history list, so you can quickly find it again.
  • Clone – Cloning a chat allows you to create a duplicate that allows you to continue the conversation without affecting the original chat. It can also be used if you want to continue from a colleague’s chat.
  • Copy Chat – Copying the chat will copy all text in the chat conversation.
  • Retry a response or stop one that's generating.
  • Citations – In Basic AI Chat, citations show you which document passages were used to inform AI Chat’s response, along with a link directly back to the source document — click one to jump into the Document Viewer.
  • View Document List – In Agentic Chat, you can view all relevant documents returned to answer your prompt within a document list. Depending on what you ask, the document list will provide AI-generated fields to answer questions about multiple documents at once.

When reviewing an answer, check the citations against the source documents — this is the fastest way to build confidence in the tool's answers for your specific matter. Always apply professional judgment when using any information from AI chat responses.
